How to properly size a water chiller for the concrete industry.
July 6, 2025Buying a chiller based on tonnage is not the best way to properly size a chiller. Tonnage as used in the HVAC field, is a term that describes how much heat the AC unit can remove in one hour. The measurement for heat is the British thermal unit (BTU). However a 60 ton chiller in the heat of Arizona is less productive then the same unit operating in Alaska.
A chiller needs to be based on its operating environment and how it will be incorporated into the concrete batch plant water system. A chillers performance is also impacted by the system efficiencies or lack of and the actual amount of water required per yard of concrete produced.
